Hair Replacement Treatments that Work for Women

March 31 2021

When most people think of hair loss, they think of the effects of male pattern baldness on men. But the truth is that hair loss happens to women as well. In fact, a large percentage of women will experience hair loss that’s noticeable before they turn 40. When it happens to you, it’s extremely troubling. The good news is that you don’t have to go through it alone and that there are many effective hair replacement treatments that help women. We’re here to help at the Hair Restoration Institute.

How is hair loss different in women?

The way women lose hair can be much different than in men, except in cases of hair loss from some medical treatments like chemotherapy. In male-pattern baldness, men lose hair in a generally predictable pattern, with a hairline that recedes and areas of thinning on the top toward the back. In female pattern baldness, the pattern is somewhat different, and may not be a pattern at all. Many women tend to lose hair all over, so it’s more of a gradual thinning than a noticeable difference in one area. Others have hair loss all the way along the part line at the top of the head.

Which hair replacement treatments work for women?

Women have so many options for hair replacement today thanks to modern technology and medical innovations.

Dermal Lens. Our exclusive Dermal Lens hair replacement systems are fully customizable to address your individual needs. Developed from 100% natural Euro human hair, Dermal Lens hair replacement systems are different from wigs because they become a part of your natural hair. Your hair will move naturally because your replacement hair system is built right into your own natural hair. There’s no worry about windy weather giving away your secret because our integrated Dermal Lens system will stay in place along with your natural hair.

PRP therapy. For some women, hair just needs a growth boost. That’s the goal of our effective platelet-rich plasma therapy treatments, which uses your body’s own rejuvenation processes to help stimulate hair growth. It works by drawing some of your own blood, from which our HRI medical hair loss experts then extract large amounts of growth factors and stem cells, the compounds that stimulate growth. We’ll then inject these compounds into your scalp to help speed hair growth. The goal is to stimulate hair follicles to return to the growth stage and help replace thinning hair.

MEP-90 Laser hair replacement. The MEP-90 laser is the only medical device approved by the FDA for women’s hair regrowth. It’s a non-invasive, prescription-only method that uses light therapy to stimulate hair growth. The MEP-90 is an effective treatment. In fact, tests show that 97% of patients experienced total hair counts of greater than or equal to 20% more than pre-treatment after a full treatment cycle of 36 treatments.

FUE and FUT hair transplantation. FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit transplantation) are two minimally invasive hair transplantation procedures that can be effective for women. Both types use donor hair from thicker areas of hair that are transplanted into areas of thinning. The results are permanent and natural-looking because you’re using your own hair follicles to grow hair. The difference is that FUT uses strips of hair, while FUE transplants small units and does not leave a visible scar.

The hair replacement treatment that works best for you will depend on your own hair loss treatment needs, so the first step is a full assessment of the extent of your hair loss and your own personal goals for hair replacement. Some other options include:

  • Follea European hair wigs and custom wigs
  • Scalp micro pigmentation
