Fact or Fiction – Causes of Hair Loss

February 26 2021

Millions of men and women experience hair loss, and when it’s happening to your own hair, it can be very upsetting. You may wonder if you did something wrong and if any of the myths you hear about hair loss are true. There are several different causes of hair loss, and everyone who suffers from hair loss will have a different experience. There are plenty of effective hair replacement treatments available, and it’s important to get past the confusion and understand the facts about the causes of hair loss. Here are some common questions we hear from patients.

Will I lose hair early if hair loss is common in my family?

The simple answer is that heredity is one of the most common causes of hair loss, but that doesn’t mean that you will definitely experience hair loss at an early age. Hereditary conditions cause a predictable type of hair loss, with common patterns that make it easier to diagnose the cause. The technical term is androgenic alopecia, but it’s most commonly called male-pattern or female-pattern baldness. In women, this type of hair loss often occurs at the top of the scalp, and in men, it’s often characterized by bald spots toward the back of the crown and a receding hairline in the front. If hair loss runs in your family, the positive note is that you can take charge now with effective treatments early on before your hair loss becomes more noticeable.

Does hair in the shower drain mean I’m losing hair?

To understand the answer to this question, it’s important to first understand hair growth. Each follicle in your scalp grows a separate hair shaft, and each of those follicles is operating on different schedules. There are four cycles to hair growth: growth, regression, rest, and shedding. The regression stage is where the hair strand separates from the root but does not yet shed – this happens only after a rest period. As you can see, every hair will eventually shed, but every strand of hair is in a different phase, so you don’t often notice any difference. Therefore, just because there’s hair in your drain doesn’t mean that you are experiencing hair thinning. It’s when this cycle starts to slow that you will notice thinning if the hair is shedding faster than it is growing in. While your shower drain may worry you, it’s not the only indication of hair loss. It’s best to have a professional medical evaluation of your hair growth before becoming concerned about potential hair loss.

Is hair loss something I’ll only worry about after age 50?

Unfortunately, many people experience hair loss earlier than their 50s. Research has shown that about 66% of men experience some type of pattern hair loss before age 35, and 85% experience thinner hair by age 50. For some, hair loss can happen as early as their 20s, and women can also experience hair loss before their 50s. No matter what your age, if you’re concerned that your hair is thinning, come to the Hair Restoration Institute for a free, discreet consultation appointment to assess your level of hair loss.
