Benefits from Hair Transplant Procedures in the Winter

February 11 2021

There are a lot of myths going around out there about winter being a bad time to get your hair restoration treatment. That is not true! As long as you follow the post-op care tips, there are actually many benefits to getting your hair restoration treatment done in the wintertime. Cold weather will definitely not affect your hair transplant.

Winter vacation alibi. If you’re a private person and aren’t planning on streaming your hair transplant journey on social media, winter might be the perfect time to discreetly disappear during the cold winter months without raising any eyebrows. Yes, you could do your hair transplant in lieu of summer vacation as well but with the warmer weather, people tend to be out and about more, making it harder to keep it low-key.

Don’t miss your summer vacation. If you’re one to regularly engage in summer vacations, you won’t want to miss out on the fun, family activities. While healing, you won’t be able to participate in all the fun including swimming, ocean activities, sun tanning, and any sports activities you do during your fun in the sun. Instead, getting your hair transplant in the winter will guarantee that you’ll avoid the sun exposure to your scalp and won’t miss out on spending time with family and making those irreplaceable memories once summer vacation comes around.

Cover up your healing. A soft-lined winter hat is a great option after the initial 7 to 10 days of healing to hide your scalp after FUE. As your incisions heal after your restoration, you may also experience tiny pink spots or some light scabbing. Also, the buzzed area where grafts were taken will be apparent during this time. Staying inside during the cold winter is the perfect excuse to keep your transplanted grafts protected during the first 7-10 days, but if you do need to go out, take advantage of the cold and wear a loose hoody shirt to protect your transplanted grafts.

Stay protected from perspiration. In the first two weeks of your hair transplant, you will need to keep your scalp clean and protected. Although at Hair Restoration Institute we will send you home with specialized solutions and dry shampoo, it’s crucial that your scalp stays free from excessive perspiration. Sweating won’t drastically affect the results of your hair transplant surgery or recovery period, but it is important to keep the area clean and that means no sweat, dirt, or grime. Cold weather can reduce your chance of perspiration, making this aspect of healing less uncomfortable.

Travel costs. When looking at the options for FUE, FUT, or hair transplants, you will have a lot of questions including procedure, cost, the surgery, and if you will be traveling from out of town to our DFW Hair Restoration Institute facility, you will need to take into account travel costs. Summer versus winter airfares, hotel rates, and other expenses can help you make your decision hinge on the best time of year to save money.

Post-op care tips: Whether you prefer the ease of winter for your hair transplant or summer, you’ll get great results by following some simple post-op instructions:

  • Limit heavy lifting, exercise, or contact sports for the first seven to ten days
  • Stay out of the sun.
  • Baby your transplant for the first two weeks, and follow the washing instructions that we will provide to you to keep the area clean and without risk of damage to the transplanted grafts.
  • After the initial healing period, wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15 whenever going outside.

At the Hair Restoration Institute, we offer two different types of hair transplantation treatments: FUT and FUE.

  • FUE Hair Transplantation. NeoGraft® FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplantation is an advanced procedure that uses donor follicles from other parts of your scalp to transplant them into thinning areas. It uses precision techniques to remove individual follicles without using a strip of hair, which can cause a linear scar. FUE lets you wear your hair very short while keeping your hair replacement procedure discreet.

  • FUT Hair Transplantation. FUT, or Follicular Unit Transplantation, uses precise strips of donor's hair to replace hair in thinning areas. Like FUE, it’s minimally invasive and the results are natural-looking and permanent.

Every person is different, so the expert hair loss specialists at Hair Restoration Institute will assess your needs and determine if hair transplantation is the right option for you, they will talk about whether FUE or FUT is the best choice for your needs.
